Everybody is into MMA (Mixed Martial Arts) these days. We are obsessed with watching it on TV and we fantasize about being in the ring. From UFC to BJJ to Pride to Reality Fighting and more, MMA is popular with men and women of all ages. But what is it?

MMA, as we know it in America, is a cross of stand-up fighting skills, like Muay Thai Kickboxing, and ground fighting skills, like judo and jiu-jitsu. The basic idea is to learn to fight standing and on the ground, hence the term ‘mixed martial arts’. Why is this mixed? Because in America we think of martial arts as purely Oriental fighting methods, like karate, kung Fu, and taekwondo. In this respect, the Oriental martial arts have usually been neatly divided between the ‘kick/punch’ arts and the ‘grappling’ arts.

Most Americans think that the Gracie’s invented MMA. What many people don’t know is that MMA has been practiced for many centuries all over the world. The most notable of which is the Greek art of Pankration which can be traced back to the original Olympic games in 648 BC. And, while they may not be known for it, many karate styles from Japan have incorporated wrestling, grappling, and joint-locking skills into their curriculum for centuries. In fact, MMA was very popular as a spectator sport in Japan before it was brought into the American spotlight.

So what is “Recreational MMA”?

Well, if you have ever watched an MMA match on TV, you may have noticed that the fighters are in great shape, they have terrific practical self-defense skills, but they also get pretty banged up. Most of us watch this and think that would be pretty cool to do if only I didn’t have to get my nose broken. After all, we do have to go to work the next day and we would prefer to do it without black eyes.

If you have looked into training at the few MMA clubs in the area (heavy emphasis on ‘clubs’ not ‘schools’), you will find that they are populated mostly with guys in their mid-twenties who think they are the next Cage Fighting Champion of the world. If that’s what you want, then jump in. But if you are the average woman or business professional who wants to get in shape like a top MMA athlete without being surrounded by muscle heads and Neanderthals, then Recreational MMA is right for you.

In Recreational MMA we train like champions, not in a basement or dungeon dojo, but in a clean and modern facility. We train with partners who want to “look tough, act tough, and play nice”. We use all the best techniques and training methods, but we go home with our nose in the same place as when we walked in. Best of all, we get a great workout and learn real ring fighting skills without ever having to set foot in a ring.

THIS IS NOT SISSY TRAINING! Recreational MMA is real kickboxing training, with a tough workout, and professional instructors. The difference is that the people you are training with are in it to have fun and get in shape. They are not trying to kill you and they are not trying prove how macho they are. It is what the title implies, a workout in MMA for those who want recreation, not title belts.

How have I grown this year?

Drafting a Victory List is a very exciting and powerful exercise that gets all of us to relive our magical moments and greatest victories.

Some questions you may want to ask to spark your pen into action:

How have I grown this year? What have I learned? How have I improved as a Martial Artist? What new skills have I developed?

What areas have I seen the greatest gains? How am I better than I was a year ago? Personally as well professionally?

Some victories are obvious and will quickly come to your mind. Victories like a new rank, an award you may have won, great performance review, a job promotion, a pay increase or a higher title or position. An increased income, a new car, a new house an engagement or marriage.

Other victories are a bit more hidden to the external world. However, that doesn’t make them any less important. In fact, these hidden victories are often the most important and even more valuable in the long run.

Victories like handling obstacles in your life in a much calmer and proactive manner. Maybe your self-confidence has improved and you are more willing to take on new challenges. Maybe you lost weight and/or you have improved your overall health habits.

Most people find it easier to see the setbacks, the problems or challenges they have faced in their year. No doubt, all of us may experience some setbacks and made some mistakes. This is especially true when you’re an aggressive achiever and you’re attempting to move faster in your journey.

Whatever we recognize and reward…we will get more of.

Focus on the positives and you get more positives…focus on the negatives and you get more negatives. The choice is yours.

BLACK BELT LEADERS always search for the good and use it as a building tool for future growth and achievement. Feed the proper fuel to your fire and you will intensify the desire to succeed with all your goals in life.

· Take a few minutes to review and reflect on your year.

· Write down your best memories and achievements.

· Share your Victories with your Mentor, Sensei or loved ones.

Often times when you do this exercise, you'll begin to frame in goals for making the New Year even better.

The quiet after the storm

Wanted: A New Home

My name is Cooper.

I am a black lab who needs a new home.

My owners are too busy to give me the love I need, so they are trying to find me a home that wants a dog.

I love to run and jump and play in the yard. I have great agility skills. I need an owner who can play with me a lot! Ideally I would like an owner who is an outdoor enthusiast.

I make a great watch dog. While I am about 90 pounds, I really think I’m a lap dog and love to snuggle on the couch.

I am very accustomed to using a wireless fence and I know my boundaries well, but I also love to be taken for long walks.

I really like to ride in the car, especially if we can go to the beach.

I’m about 5 years old and pretty healthy except that certain foods make me irritable. Lamb and rice dog food is good for me.

If you know of an owner who has the time to play with me every day, then I would like to meet them and see if we are a good match.

There's no single, simple way to prevent cyber-cruelty so severe that the victims see no escape. Updated harassment laws, tougher enforcement, education and parental supervision all have a role.

But one untapped approach is to try to harness the same technology that facilitates the cruelty as a way to combat it. If fighting back against bullies is a timeless way to silence them, perhaps what's needed is a heavy dose of cyber-disgrace, imposed not by law but virally by more mature and responsible students.(read more)

The New York Times (June 27, 2010): Schools these days are confronted with complex questions on whether and how to deal with cyber-bullying, an imprecise label for online activities ranging from barrages of teasing texts to sexually harassing group sites. The extent of the phenomenon is hard to quantify. But one 2010 study by the Cyberbullying Research Center, an organization founded by two criminologists who defined bullying as "willful and repeated harm” inflicted through phones and computers, said one in five middle-school students had been affected.

Affronted by cyberspace’s escalation of adolescent viciousness, many parents are looking to schools for justice, protection, even revenge. But many educators feel unprepared or unwilling to be prosecutors and judges. (read more)

“Nobody Picks On Me!”

NH just passed a new law making bullying and cyber-bullying a serious crime NH. Schools are responsible for creating action plans to deal with bullies, and teachers are now ‘mandatory reporters’ making it illegal to not report bullying. There is no doubt that bullying is scary and should be dealt with harshly. Everyone wants to talk about punishing bullies, but it seems that so many are missing the other half of the story – how do we teach children not to become victims?

That’s what we have been doing for 25 years! We teach children to have the confidence, the discipline, and yes…the skills, not to become victims. We teach children to become leaders, not followers, and to hold their heads up high so that they don’t become bully magnets. I know from personal experience that martial arts training ends bullying. Congratulations to Master West and students!

This past Thursday evening I had the honor of being invited to a belt graduation at Master West’s Kwan Ki Do Martial Arts Academy in Maine.

16 students were promoted to various beginner ranks. The students were very well disciplined, polite and respectful…exactly the way you picture future black belts should be.

I can tell that Master West cares deeply about his students and the quality of their training.

I am doubly honored that Master West has asked me to be his instructor for the next leg of his training towards his 5th Degree Black Belt. He and I have similar training backgrounds and I look forward to working closely with him to help him prepare for this big step.

Some of Master West’s students are planning to join us for the Friendship Tournament we are hosting on 9/25. It will be very exciting to greet them at our academy for the first time and I know that I can count on all of our students to welcome them with your best martial arts etiquette.

Welcome to our new Future Instructors!

We are very pleased to welcome two new members to our team of Instructors, Mr. Skipp Schultz and Mr. Aaron Hutto.

Mr. Schultz is currently an orange belt at our academy but shows great promise to be an instructor as he trains toward achieving his black belt in the near future. Mr. Schultz is a good example that you don’t need to be a black belt in order to begin instructor training. In fact, it is better to start the training beforehand so that by the time you are a black belt you are fully certified to teach. And, by the way, you are never too young or too old to start instructor training. Master Lindquist started ITP at age 12. Mr. Bell started when he was pre-teen and had a paid position by the time he was 14. Mr. Dobson started at age 11 and now does a great job teaching on Saturdays. He is positioned well to become a paid instructor throughout high school. Mr. P started in his 60’s is doing fantastic. Imagine how awesome they would be if they all started at age 8. Ask your instructor how you can get started.

Mr. Hutto (Mr. H) comes to us as a black belt from a school in Massachusetts. He has many years of teaching experience and loves to teach children and women’s self-defense. We look forward to certifying Mr. H in our teaching methods so that he can begin teaching classes as soon as possible. Until then, he is working for the academy as a Level 4 Marketing and Sales staff member. His role will be to help find more terrific students like the ones we have. You will see Mr. H staffing our booth at festivals and tradeshows as well as teaching Women’s Personal Protection and Children’s Stranger Danger programs very shortly. We are still looking for another motivated individual to assume the same type of role at our Stratham academy. Martial arts experience is helpful, but not required. If you are interested, please speak with your instructor this week.

Congratulations to our instructors who have passed their Red Collar test this week: Master Lindquist, Mr. Bell, Mr. Dobson, Mr. Paltrineri, and Mr. Lane. Little 'Barbie Brat' bullies become a concern
Recess was Allie Long's favorite part of the day until the second grade, when some of her friends on the playground pressured her to join their whisper campaign against a classmate.
Allie shrugged. She didn't want to hear their rumor or help spread it around. In an instant, her best friends since kindergarten became her tormenters.
"They started taunting and teasing her," said Allie's mom, Trudy Ludwig. "She was on this play structure and they blocked all of the exits and wouldn't let her off. They started moving closer to her. Allie just freaked out. One of the girls realized it was getting out of hand and got a teacher to help."
Bullying among adolescents has captured the attention of researchers, educators and parents alarmed by a parade of mean girls and cyber-bullies caught in mid-punch on viral video. But such aggression may not just happen in a whirl of adolescent hormones, some in the growing anti-bully movement argue.
Some older bullies were "Barbie brats" first.
In Allie's case, the kids were talked to, but things weren't the same at her Beaverton, Ore., school.
"My daughter cried herself to sleep on and off for several months," Ludwig said. "She had stomachaches. The phone stopped ringing. No playdates. No invitations to sleepovers."
They were just 7 years old.
Meline Kevorkian, a Fort Lauderdale, Fla., researcher and public speaker on bullying, surveyed 167 educators last year and 25 percent indicated bullying occurs most in elementary schools. Research also indicates that three-quarters of 8- to 11-year-olds report they've been bullied, with more than half identifying it as a "big" problem, Kevorkian said.
"It could be you wear the wrong shoes or the wrong socks. If you didn't go to the Hannah Montana concert. Your lunch smells. You can't wear certain bows in your hair," she said. "It's not that the victims are all going to grow up and shoot kids in their high school, but it's the message that making fun of people will make you popular."
Rumor-spreading, teasing, exclusive clubs, secrets. What social scientists describe as "relational aggression" is often unjustly written off among younger kids as routine rites of passage not worthy of extra hands-on attention, Kevorkian and other anti-bully experts said.
Parents of targeted children agreed.
"Everybody seems under the impression that their child is well behaved in all settings," said Lisa Borre, whose 9-year-old son, Franklin, loves sports but is small for his age and often struggles for equal time during playground baseball and basketball games in Libertyville, Ill.
"Nobody is willing to believe their children might behave differently on the playground," she said. "I just sort of felt like at this age the kids would still be gentler, kinder, would still behave more like little children. It's almost like a smaller version of an adult world that he's dealing with."
Ludwig, who was inspired by her now 14-year-old daughter's experience to write four picture books on bullying, said girls in particular often connect by sharing secrets that can later be turned into weapons. Such verbal abuse and social manipulation, which Ludwig and other experts say is on the rise in boys, often flies under the radar of harried parents, teachers or baby sitters.
"It's evident in preschool. 'If you don't let me play with that toy I won't invite you to my birthday party,'" Ludwig said. "Intentional exclusion is bullying. Giving the silent treatment is bullying. It's not a part of growing up. It's not something kids can work out themselves. It's not normal conflict. We've normalized this abnormal behavior in our society."
Little research has tracked bullying among the very young, but the topic is beginning to gain momentum. Intervention programs, including fifth-graders tapped as peer mediators on playgrounds, began popping up a few years ago in elementary schools, but the institutional response to bullying is often piecemeal or inconsistent, advocates said.
Michele Borba, who writes and speaks frequently on bullying, felt so intensely about such incidents among the very young that she helped develop a "Caring Corners" dollhouse due on the market later this year, designed to talk to kids about positive behavior.
"Little kids are born to be kindhearted," Borba said. "They've got that natural empathy, but unless you nurture it, it lies dormant."
Nurturing empathy might be hard for competitive parents who scream at 6-year-olds during soccer games, or buy Coach bags for their girls, then wonder out loud who's carrying the knockoffs, said Barbara Kimmel, the mother of two boys, ages 11 and 14, in Morris County, N.J.
Technology makes it even harder.
"The cyber-bullying starts at 10 or 11 now," she said. "It's pervasive."
To psychologist Jennifer Hartstein, who works with troubled adolescents in New York City, signs are evident even earlier. She cites a recent party she attended for a 6-year-old that featured a pinata.
"It was, like, who can you step on and push fast enough to get the candy," she said. "It's this 'me generation' of I have to get what's mine. It's the precursor to more serious bullying. You really have to catch it as it happens at younger ages."

Kids with ADHD more likely to bully

And those pushed around tend to exhibit attention problems, study finds

When her 5-year-old son showed up at the door with a black eye and a bloody cut on his head, Brooke Fike knew it was time to take on the bullies. For weeks, several boys at school had been swinging their backpacks into her son's head. One day they dumped a carton of milk over him during lunch.

As Fike tried to remedy the problem, she realized that the bullies seemed to be the kids in class who couldn’t sit still and listen. They didn’t do their homework. They were almost constantly in motion.

Turns out, those behaviors could have been the first clue to parents and school officials that these boys might be the ones who were going to turn into bullies.

A new study shows that children with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder are almost four times as likely as others to be bullies. And, in an intriguing corollary, the children with ADHD symptoms were almost 10 times as likely as others to have been regular targets of bullies prior to the onset of those symptoms, according to the report in the February issue of the journal Developmental Medicine & Child Neurology.

The study followed 577 children — the entire population of fourth graders from a municipality near Stockholm — for a year. The researchers interviewed parents, teachers and children to determine which kids were likely to have ADHD. Children showing signs of the disorder were then seen by a child neurologist for diagnosis. The researchers also asked the kids about bullying.

The results underscore the importance of observing how kids with ADHD symptoms interact with their peers, says study co-author Dr. Anders Hjern, a professor in pediatric epidemiology at the University of Uppsala in Stockholm. These kids might be making life miserable for their fellow students. Or it might turn out that the attention problems they’re exhibiting could be related to the stress of being bullied.

"You can't learn if you're being bullied, if every day you're frightened of how you're going to be treated," says William Pollack, an assistant clinical professor of psychiatry at Harvard Medical School.

As for the bullies, they often need help with other issues, Pollack says. It’s not uncommon, for instance, to find that the aggressor is acting out because he’s depressed. And often, the kids who are doing the bullying have been bullied themselves, he adds.

Alan Kazdin, a specialist in child development, says the new results may help sensitize parents and teachers to the possibility that some kids with ADHD might have issues that go beyond antsy behaviors and attention problems. Estimates of how many kids have ADHD range from 4 percent to 12 percent.

Unfortunately though, treating ADHD won't remedy the bullying because drugs for the condition impact a child's ability to focus in school but not the aggression that could lead to bullying, says Kazdin, a professor of psychology and child psychiatry and director of the Parenting Center and Child Conduct Clinic at Yale University, and president of the American Psychological Association.

Battling bullying
Still, the new study could help teachers and parents identify who's at potential risk of bullying and being bullied.

“This is a huge problem in the schools,” says Dr. Joyce Nolan Harrison, an assistant professor of psychiatry at the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine and director of Preschool Clinical Programs at the Johns Hopkins Bayview Medical Center. Studies show it's particularly common in grades 6 through 10, when as many as 30 percent of students report they've had moderate or frequent involvement in bullying, she says.

The best solution for bullying is for schools to develop programs that help both the bullies and the bullied, experts say.

“Bullies are like the lion looking for a deer that’s left the herd,” says Patrick Tolan, director of the Institute for Juvenile Research at the University of Illinois. “They try to single out the weakest kid. The best way to stop this is to work on increasing inclusion by helping the bullied kids with social skills.”

Another strategy that can work: Help the bullied kids find each other. “If there are a bunch of them together, they can stand the bully down,” Pollack says. “They don’t have to beat the bully up. They just have to say, ‘Why are you treating my friend this way?’ The bully will often move on.”

Parental role
In the end, though, schools might not have the inclination or resources to deal with bullying. In that case, parents need to take matters into their own hands. To do this, you’ll need to enlist the help of all the other parents of bullied children, says Pollack. “Parents have to work as a group,” he explains. “One parent is a pain in the [butt]. A group of parents can be an educational experience for school authorities.”

One thing you shouldn’t do, Pollack says, is call up the bully’s parents. “You have no idea of what is going on in that kid’s home,” he says. “He may get hell for bullying your kid — or he may be told to keep it up.”

Ultimately, you may not be able to stop the bullying. “If schools are not prepared to take action, which is sometimes the unfortunate case, I believe parents should consider changing schools,” Hjern says.

That’s what Fike chose to do a few years ago. “I moved him to a different school where there’s a lot more parent participation,” she says. “It had gotten so he didn’t want to go to school and would cry in the morning. Now he can’t wait to go.”

Somersworth school fair teaches healthy habits
SOMERSWORTH — Students danced, punched and ate their way through a recent Health Fair designed to promote healthy living and eating practices.

The event, which was held in the high school's cafetorium, was a free night of dinner and activities geared toward all students and parents in the Somersworth School District, said Sean Miller, the SAU 56's food service director.

He said the purpose of the fair was to reach out to the community and raise awareness about healthy habits, as well as provide education to the attendees.

"I think it's teaching the kids the right way to eat," he said. "You can eat things that are kind of fattening, but as long as you eat them in the right portion size then it's good. As the kids grow up, the healthier you eat, the healthier your body is going to be, and that's why we're promoting this so much in Somersworth."

Miller said the fair was organized by the Rollinsford/Somersworth Wellness Committee, which meets once a month and its members include himself and all five of the district's school nurses. He said this event wasn't the only attempt to get the students eating healthy, as there are initiatives in place every day in the schools, such as a program that provides fresh produce as daily snacks. He said all food items in the schools are also labeled with nutritional information so students know more about what they are putting in their bodies.

While several students said they came out to the event for the free dinner, which featured a chicken and broccoli Alfredo dish made with whole grain ziti and low-fat cream and milk, many said they came out for the activities.

Jeremiah Quirion, a fourth-grader at Hilltop Elementary School, said he enjoyed getting involved in the karate demonstration from Matt Randall's Black Belt Academy.

"I just wanted to come out and have fun," said Quirion, 10. "I liked punching things."

He said he thought it was important to keep your body healthy, and said he frequently eats healthy food such as oranges, his favorite fruit.

Tiara Phillips, a third-grader at Hilltop, attended because she said she thinks it's important to be active and practice healthy eating habits, two things she does often. She said she thinks students her age are fairly healthy, but suggested eating more fruits and vegetables as a way to be healthier. She said she noticed the biggest change in the way she felt when she made one particular diet change in 2008.

"I don't drink soda anymore," said Phillips, 9, who plays soccer. "It was kind of slowing me down during my running."
Parents without students in the district also came out to the event.

Patrick Kinneavy, a member of the Somersworth High School Class of 1997, said he wanted to get involved because he wants his 11-month-old daughter, Danielle, to eat healthier than he did growing up. Kinneavy said he remembers the school providing "a variety" of healthy menu options, but said he often bypassed those items in favor of the snack line, a decision he said he's "still paying the price for."

"I want to make sure when my kid gets to this age that I don't have to worry about her health," said Kinneavy, 30, who said he also came out to support his wife, who teaches at Maple Wood Elementary School. "I want to make sure (Danielle's) healthy."
Other activities at the health fair included dancing organized by Studio 109 in Gonic, jumping rope, music, and educational information from Blackman Chiropractic Center, McGregor Memorial EMS, and NH Healthy Kids medical insurance, among others.

A healthy dessert made by the Somersworth Career Technical Center's culinary program was also offered, although attendees with a sweet tooth had to go on a mile walk through the school led by high school students before they could eat the dessert, said Pat LeBlanc, the middle school's nurse.

I've loved mixed martial arts for a long time now, but only recently did my friend Stefan invite me into the class at the academy. And only recently did I discover what the martial arts are really about, discipline, respect and honesty. Since joining the academy I have been told that I have improved in many aspects of my life. My dad was the first to notice that I now have a much easier time approaching strangers and introducing myself than I previously had. My confidence in myself has sky rocketed, and I now feel comfortable in many situations that I would have been uncomfortable in before. I have become more of an honest person now, and I see many things in my life progressing as well. Since joining MRBBA, my grades have actually gone up. I now have a 3.1 GPA and am proud of my improvement over time. I also have learned to handle things better. I used to be a very emotional kid, and would get flustered fairly easily. But now I'm stronger and I know how to effectively manage my thoughts and emotions. Today's opening of the new "Karate Kid" movie will jumpstart an anti-bullying informational fair hosted by Regal Fox Run Stadium 15 and the Community Diversion Program. The fair, which runs today through Sunday, will include resources on how parents, children and the community can help prevent bullying.

"We want to reduce the impact of bullying and build communities where bullying is unacceptable and the horrible consequences are dealt with so they don't come into being," said William Meub, youth service coordinator for the Community Diversion Program, a youth court diversion program that aims to help locals make healthier choices.

From 5 to 8 p.m. tonight, centered around the 7 p.m. showing of "Karate Kid," the Community Diversion Program will offer information, a video workshop and tips on what bullying is, how it can be stopped and what adults can do. Community organizations and businesses like Matt Randall's Black Belt Academy, Big Brothers/Big Sisters of the Greater Seacoast, and Awareness Unlimited will provide demonstrations and information. Information will also be available in the theater's lobby throughout the weekend.

With its messages of self-confidence and positive mentoring relationships, "Karate Kid" was a perfect film to associated with the fair, Meub said. The film tells the story of a young bullied teenager with nowhere to turn until he finds a mentor, who teaches him martial arts and how to overcome his challenges.

"In learning those martial arts skills, he gains self-confidence, self-discipline and he basically stops being a victim and gains control of his own life," Meub said. "And he starts developing that really important mentoring relationship. Mentoring relationships with an older person are really important for the healthy development of youth. While that is key, so is physical activity that builds self-confidence."

The New Karate Kid Movie Opens

The Karate Kid movie opened this past weekend to sell-out crowds. Our demonstration team was there to celebrate the opening show and received great reviews from the captive audience of 200 in the theatre.

Mr. Dobson, our very own karate kid, staffed a table in the lobby to give everyone free information about our upcoming Bully Proof courses on June 22-23.

Thanks also to Mr. P, Master L, and Ms. Hayes who helped hand out information as well.

Bully Proof Your Child

Bullying is a serious problem that has many dangerous and damaging consequences for the victims, the bullies, and those who witness bullying. All the new studies agree that the problem is bigger than we think and it is starting at an earlier age than ever before.

Most classes on bullying have focused on one of two topics; getting bullies to understand and modify their behavior, or getting victims to speak up and learn to ask for help.

While they are good in their intentions, most of these programs don’t achieve their goals because bullies don’t have the right incentive to change and the victims just become victims who are ‘tattle tales’. Unfortunately, none of these programs teaches kids how to help themselves, to develop real self-confidence, or to learn to protect themselves when ‘using your words’ doesn’t work.

Martial arts training approaches this from a different point of view. What if we teach kids who are victims to stop being victims by empowering them to develop true confidence? And, what if we teach bullies to develop respect for themselves and others by empowering them to become leaders, not tyrants? And, what if we teach them all to work together for a common goal?

As part of my black belt exam in the martial arts I am doing a community service project for the Somersworth Public Library.

Public libraries offer free books, audio books, movies, children’s activities, and events. They offer a place to study or just read and relax. It’s time to give back.
The Somersworth Public Library needs your help. The children’s room needs 3 end casings. The library itself needs 6 wheelchair accessible tables and an updated medical section. All donations will go towards the cost of these items. I have currently raised nearly $50.
